Freda Diesing

Artist Bio
Freda Diesing (1925 - 2002), was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. She had been carving and designing since the late 1960's and was one of the first students at K'san. Her instructors included Robert Davidson, Tony Hunt and Bill Holm.
Freda was well known among her peers as a great teacher of the Northwest Coast Art. Her work has been exhibited in many exhibitions including the 'Legacy' show at the Museum of Anthropology, University of British Columbia; the Heritage House Gallery; several Department of Indian Affairs' shows as well as touring exhibits to other countries through the Department of External Affairs.
As a past director of the Indian Arts and Crafts society of BC, she taught Northwest Coast carving and design to Haida, Tsimshian and Tlingit students in British Columbia and Alaska.
Freda was honoured "The Most Outstanding Aboriginal Award" in 2002.
As of September 2006, Terrace's Northwest Community College developed the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art to honour, recognise and continue Freda's amazing legacy.
