Russell Mather

Russell was born in his grandfather's house in Lax Kw'Alaams, BC. He is a member of the house of Smoogit Gixtxoon Gispaxlo'ats Lax Sgyiik tribe of the Tsimshian Nation.

Russell mentored under his grandfather Soloman Gray since he was old enough to help with chores around the house. Russell's relationship with his grandfather is very special to him. Soloman noticed Russell's natural curiousity and love of the art form, so let him take part in working on pieces. He was told stories in Sm'algyax, the Tsimshian language as they worked, and helped him develop an appreciation and desire to continue forward with the art.

Russell learned from stories and example. Soloman stressed the importance of the sacredness of the art of the Tsimshian, as well as the skills and patience needed to do the work with him. Some things were not to be shared with the outside world as he was told. Russell still hold to that tradition today.

Artist Statement

I express who I am and where I come from through my art and abilities. My strength comes from not only from within but from my family and my heritage. I hope years from now my art will speak as a legacy.
